The first person to hide a cache in a location simply uses a waterproof storage container filled with various small, inexpensive objects like toys, trinkets, coins, books, and other personally meaningful items. Also included is a small logbook and writing utensil. These items are meant to be traded by those that find the cache – take something, leave something. The finder also notes in the logbook their name, and what the date and time of the find were, as well as what item was taken. These steps are simply to let others know who was there, what was taken, and how popular the specific cache is.
Good for both adults and younger children, geocaching can provide entertainment for different amounts of time, depending on how difficult the coordinates are to locate. It also can provide some exercise depending on where you go. Some people will bring their pets for extra fun. Deciding which cache to go after is as easy as using the internet to find nearby sites, and plugging them into a GPS device. The devices that can be used range from smartphones to specifically designed geocaching GPS units. The websites list different attributes of each search, allowing potential geocachers to know exactly what they are in for during the process. This feature helps when taking smaller children along, as the difficulty of the journey, the location, and the time required can be assessed before even leaving the home.
Geocaching is an ideal way to spend time outdoors during the warm months, and can be an added bonus to spending a day at the park or the reason to visit a specific location. People of all ages will enjoy finding the cache, and looking through it to see who else found it, and when. Trading the treasures – or “geoswag” inside is just another fun part of this hobby – many people even transfer items from one cache into the next that they find, allowing certain items to travel great distances. Aside from the device that will lead explorers to the caches, the internet, and some time, there are not many supplies needed for his hobby. Having a great deal of time is not even a truly important factor, as some cache locations are out in public, and the only thing that they require is walking to the exact locations.
